The Program

The wonderful singer Nataša Mirković and three virtuoso instrumentalists, representing their respective cultural backgrounds, perform famous Sephardic songs from the 15th century. These are songs that spread far beyond the Mediterranean, the Adriatic, the Aegean, the Black Sea, and the Sea of Marmara... all the way to Central Europe, and have remained in people's hearts to this day.

"We had actually originally planned a different project. But when I suggested the idea of playing old Sephardic songs from my Spanish homeland, the magic happened: Nataša (born in Bosnia) knew many of them, and she could have sung even more, naturally in Ladino. Murat (Turkey/Germany) and Marco (Italy) also recognized the songs and contributed related music and rhythms from their own homelands.
The rehearsals felt like a family reunion after five hundred years. I was deeply touched by how natural and fluid everything was—with an authenticity that can only arise from a shared musical heritage."

Música Sefárdica is a project that highlights the musical legacy of a diaspora, transforming its memory into cultural bonds between different peoples.

The performance also features arrangements of instrumental works by Diego Ortiz, Santiago de Murcia, and music from Turkey.

The songs and instrumental pieces are sometimes reimagined or lead into improvisations... yet the umbilical cord to the original is never severed, and the core essence always remains. This is boundless, sophisticated music that awakens deep-seated origins within the listeners, reviving roots that may feel unfamiliar, but never foreign.

 

Nataša Mirković, vocals

She describes herself as a vocal artist working between rock and baroque, a composer, arranger, and one of the most captivating voices of our time.

Her great versatility was also recognized in Hollywood by composer Gabriel Yared. He invited her to sing the title song for the film "Land of Blood and Honey," which marked Angelina Jolie's directorial debut, and to contribute her musical talent to the Terry George film "The Pledge."

The CD was released on the Carpe Diem label and received the prestigious German Record Critics' Award for Best Crossover Project.

Marco Ambrosini, Nickelharpa

Europe's leading and "re-founder" of the nyckelharpa, Marco Ambrosini has been performing with Murat Coşkun for many years and works as a composer, soloist, and member of various ensembles for early music, baroque music, and contemporary music. Concerts and tours have taken him to more than 25 countries. His discography comprises more than 150 CDs.

Murat Coşkun, Orientale Perkussion

Coşkun studied Oriental Studies and Ethnomusicology. The internationally acclaimed percussionist bridges the musical worlds of East and West.

His concerts have taken him to Western and Eastern Europe, Mongolia, the USA, and the Far and Middle East. As a solo percussionist, he has performed with orchestras including the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and the NDR Radio Philharmonic.

Numerous CD, TV, and radio recordings.

Rafael Catalá, an internationally renowned guitarist, composer, and boundary-crosser, joined the two musicians several years ago.

Concerts in many European countries, Japan, the Middle East, Mexico, and the USA.

He has performed as a duo with mezzo-soprano Teresa Berganza and baritone Carlos Álvarez.
