El silencio imposible (Die unmögliche Stille) ist ein musikalisches Programm der Stille, der ruhigen Zwischentöne, des Intimen. In den Werken von John Dowland und Georg Friedrich Händel singt Nicholas Spanos sehr stilvoll, mit einer sehr gut geführten Stimme. Besonders attraktiv aber sind die sechs Sephardischen Lieder. Neben dem feinen Gitarrenklang und dem expressiv eingesetzten Cello ist die Stimme des Countertenors attraktiv. Mit einem erfreulich unverkrampften, frei fließenden Vortragsstil und einem leuchtenden warmen Timbre ist Spanos nicht nur den virtuosen Forderungen des Repertoires gewachsen, sondern vermittelt auch einen Eindruck besonderer Authentizität und Eindringlichkeit. Diese klangsinnliche Delikatesse macht diese neue Gramola-CD definitiv zum empfehlenswerten Produkt.

This is an extraordinarily eclectic recording of a concert (including applause) with a true “mash-up” of music and styles. It begins with two songs by John Dowland. The first, ‘From Silent Night’, originally for treble and bass viols, “cantus” (soprano), and lute, is here arranged for countertenor, cello, and guitar, with interwoven jazz interludes and variations.

The centerpiece of this recording (and its title) is Rafael Catala’s song, ‘El Silencio Imposible’, based on a text in Spanish and German written by the composer. It is a very contemporary and dissonant work where Catala interweaves the countertenor, cello, and guitar in constantly changing textures including multiphonics from the cello and sprechstimme from the singer. © 2020 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide.
